What does the president do?

IDEALLY: Represent the American people at home and abroad and serve as a co-equal branch of government, collecting in his cabinet respective experts in all fields of governance.
REALITY: Makes friends and inner party member rich and powerful, capitalizes on the delayed gains of predecessors, minimizes current botched plans.

How does the president do it?

IDEALLY: By surrounding himself with an equal measure of supporters and detractors and making best case decisions based on the good of the whole.
REALITY: With every dirty trick in the book. Make up new ones if you have to, but don't fix what ain't broken.

Why does the president do what the president does?

IDEALLY: For the people.
REALITY: For the ego.

Wow. I'm not going to say anything about this one. I'll just stand in awe.

Actually I was wondering the same thing.

Someone was saying Clinton was more detailed in her ideas than Obama, and I said well, the president isn't suppose to actually write legislation, is he/she?

Just for fun, I'm going to pretend this is a jeopardy question. Keep in mind I didn't look this up:

He can veto shit.

He can pardon people.

He can appoint people to cabinet posts and as judges.

That's all I can think of in the category: "Executive privileges"
