    Army lowers standards

Morning Edition, April 17, 2008 · The Army is meeting its recruiting goals partly by accepting more enlistees who lack high school diplomas, who have low scores on the military's aptitude test or receive waivers for criminal and medical problems.

I encourage every young person I know to avoid military service until the Iraq boondoggle is over. Let's starve the war machine.

No no no this has to be wrong, I was told the other day that everyone was reenlisting time and time again. They love the war and those pesky suicide numbers mean nothing.

Good advise, then they will not have the atrocities of fighting and illegal and immoral war on their conscience.

You know that the majority of the "criminals" were for some minor drug crime.

I thought liberals and libertarians were big on weakening drug laws and not jailing so many people who use?

I knew there would be a spin cycle coming. You war supporters keep bringing up the great reenlistment rate as proof of GI morale, now that is proved wrong you deflect and attack the liberals and Libertarians. Good to see that your style of debate is intact.

The article doesn't say the majority were for minor drug crime. It said this.

The documents also show that waivers for serious misdemeanors increased from 3,002 in 2005 to 8,259 in 2007. The most serious criminal misconduct charges include burglary, narcotics/drug charges, aggravated assault, larceny, and breaking and entering.
    Better issue padlocks for footlockers.

I think we liberals are for looking at the evidence in how we are dealing with drug problems and how effective the responses are. Which are dismal. And making changes that would be more effective in getting the problem under control. 1 in 99 Americans are serving time in jail how is that a good thing?

I don't know if anyone knows it but the boot camp is not so different to a jail. Not supporting the war, but it is a positive that youth today are sent to the boot camp than a prison for a reformable criminal conduct.

Some of these kids may have potential as grass root opinion leaders. And they could help pass this experience to the others when they come out.

The broadcast version of this story acknowledges that the drop-outs and criminals DO tend to be prone to excel in valor but to an equal degree they excel at desertion, dropping out of rehab and behavior problems.

And the main point here is that Army has acknowledged granting waivers for recruits who they would have rejected prior to Iraq, which indicates people aren't singing up like they used to.

    Good for them.

Yeah, personally, I think whoever signs on with the Army usually has trouble finding jobs elsewhere. It isn't exactly the ideal platform for talent anyway.
