    abolish the Electoral College

Here is a summary of U.S. Senator Bill Nelson’s speech to the Florida Senate on March 27. In the speech, he said he will soon introduce federal legislation, and a proposed constitutional amendment, to do these things: abolish the Electoral College, establish a regional rotating schedule of six presidential primary dates, mandate no-excuse absentee voting for federal elections, mandate a paper trail for all vote-counting systems for federal elections, and provide grants to states for all-mail voting.

    Re: abolish the Electoral College

Hear Hear.........Abolish the Electoral College, it made sense 200 years ago.

Abolish the Senate too, it's unfair. Rhode Island with a population of 300,000 has 2 Senators. California has 2 and a population of 37,000,000. Every state in between has an unfair voting advantage. Make the House of Representatives our Parliament. Each Representative will appoint subordinates to staff comittees. Congressional voting would be more Democratic this way. Without the Electoral College, the elections Citizens vote in would be more Democratic.

Ok, Republicans/Conservatives...right here is where you explain how if this is done it is unconsitutional and will destroy the country.

    Re: abolish the Electoral College

excuse me but it is not an amendment to change something in the constitution right? the electoral college is part of what the founding fathers wrote in. You cannot change it so easily. Does this not take more than just an amendment? Like a reconviening of a constituional congress or something?

The idea of mitigating the power of the big states with giant populations was the intent of the electoral college. The founding fathers wanted to give the smaller states some power to have a little bit of a voice in elections. This all is simply a push by the Democrates to take away this balancing mechanism. If the electoral college is eliminated then the elections will simply be decided by the big population centers. Basically NY state and California would decide who wins.

I agree. I may not like the electoral college, but the fact is it does tend to democratise the voting procedure a bit more.

The Democratic party has also as of late, pushed for the voting age being lowered to 17. This is a very similar thing for them. It is not that they think anything other than they can get more votes.

Er, no. And dont accuse the Democrats of being focused on votes, as it comes in equal amounts from both sides of the floor.

The problem with extending suffrage is that it also extends apathy; us darn fools stop voting for them darn fools at all.

Meanwhile, eliminating the Electoral College is a horrible idea, for the reasons already given--it will concentrate vote power in population centers, and that will result in a loss of representation of the interests of smaller states . The current system keeps everybody at the table, and should be left alone. The removal of the Electoral College will have more ill effect than good.

In my state of Illinois there is an amendment before the state senate to change the voting age to 17.

Make no mistake. It is a democrat based proposal and it is squarely founded in the idea of increasing votes for the democratic pary.

Im not making a mistake, you are. It is founded upon the idea that 17 year olds are responsible enough to be given the right of suffrage.
