    University Violence

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Two children were found shot to death Thursday in a home in Okolona. Police are investigating possible connections between the slayings and an incident Thursday morning in which a woman with a gun was stopped on the University of Louisville campus.

Around 9:15 a.m. Thursday, officials from the University of Louisville issued a safety alert when a woman held a counselor at gunpoint in the health services building.

Does anyone have statistics on shootings/hostage situations at universities over the last few years. It would be helpful to know if it is growing problem or just sensationalized as of late.

The woman in this incident was a student.

this gives you all the notable ones, but its an incomplete picture for sure. my 4th year at syracuse there was a double murder right around the corner from my house. it was off campus, but a student was one of the victims. i don't think it made national news.

for some reason there seems to be a difference between when a student kills people, versus a student just dying at the hands of a criminal, which was the case at syracuse.

imo, i would say its been sensationalized as of late. i did a few searches but couldn't find any news stories talking about this being an increasing trend.

I had the same results when searching. Thanks for checking!

I have just noticed that on campus violence has been in the headlines as of late, but of course I agree that it has been sensationalized. Still, an incomplete picture indeed.

There was a shooting the week before the UNC one at Duke but I don't know of any major national network covering. Duke apparently was trying to keep it on the down low to avoid any more negative press at their school. He was a grad student.

I had no idea about that shooting at Duke. I suppose on campus violence doesn't even make the national headlines at times, although the one at U of L was found through CNN.

It is surprising that the national media didn't chew that one up, considering the other Duke crimes (or so-called) making headlines. When the media destroys people and places, they make alot of revenue.
