"Let me be clear about this. This is a statute. We are required after May to no longer accept these licenses at airports. We're going to obey the law. I'm not a bluffer," he said.
But some states have been prepared to call that bluff. They complain that the new driver's license requirements are unnecessary and too costly. Several have passed laws banning participation in the program, including seeking an extension.

I'm thinking you won't be able to vote either, without this ID. I'm not clear on that.

No one is biting, I don't get it.

You will not be able to do anything without it. You sit in a bar, buy four beers in an hour, swipe the card for each, I dare you.

You mean requiring citizens to present ID to vote? That's a totally alien concept, and will never fly.

Here in California you just have to pick a name on a list, claim it's yours, and they let you vote.

Four beers is kind of a lot if you are drinking by yourself. That would cost you $30 in one hour. I drink and I can't even drink that fast.

There may be problems with "Real ID", just like I have a problem with "Realemon" juice.

That doesn't mean an effective national ID isn't necessary.

How can we benefit from Real ID? You said it yourself, we already have a functioning system in place.

This plan is being introduced as a means of security. There are no security benefits from real Id that are apparent to me. Do you think the new system will aid in the War on Terror?

I agree. I don't know the details of this particular program so I have not weighed in.

But it does seem to make sense that we actually know a person is who they say they are when they vote or fly on a plane. I would prefer that it not be federalized but obviously for some uniformity and standards there will need to be some federal involvement.
