    Freedom of Speech

is one of the freedoms our armed forces fights for -- agreed?

Yet, when a former marine speaks his mind - all hell breaks loose. Did he earn the right to say what he thinks? If you disagree?

    Trinity United Church of Christ

Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He completed his elementary education in that city and then went to Virginia Union University. After three and a half years at Virginia Union, Pastor Wright left school and entered the United States Marine Corps. He transferred from the USMC into the United States Navy where he served as a cardiopulmonary technician.

After six years in the military, Pastor Wright transferred to Howard University where he completed his undergraduate studies and received his first Master’s Degree. His second Master’s Degree was from the University of Chicago Divinity School. His Doctorate was received from the United Theological Seminary under Dr. Samuel DeWitt Proctor. In addition to Pastor Wright’s four earned degrees, he has been the recipient of eight honorary doctorates.

yes he has the right to say whatever he likes to. This is regardless of military service. I am free also to say what I like. His words are racist. And Obama is a liar to say he has not heard these same thoughts expressed often in Wright's sermons.

I think racist is in the eye of the beholder - all across the board. I also think that a lot of people - both white and black - get out of doing what needs to be done by screaming about being offended by racism.

It's really kind of like living in a society of screaming squabbling queens!

I thought we were talking about Rev. Wright's right to free speech. i did not know this was a discussion about racism in general.

Wright can say whatever his heart desires to say. If he is going to be the leader of a church and tell people that the government created the aids virus in order to commit genocide of the black people i will say tha Wrights is way off base and is making racist statements. this is not about me being offended. This is about him being a racist.

I think it's about a paranoia suffered by a segment of our society - and a very different worldview. Racist - yeah, definitely.

Racism of that degree tends to evoke intense curiousity in me. I'm also fascinated by white racists - KKK, neonazi, etc.

There are - what i in my whitish world - can see as both roots of truth and convenient lies in Wright's statement. But the fact that he served six years in the military surprised me, and made me think.

Because it is a right, doesn't make it right.
If I call a man a son of a bitch, I have that right, but it doesn't make it right.

Or maybe it does - and we all have to stop running around, screaming abut it:waving:

Do I agree with him - hell, no! Do I think he's evil - and anyone who has listened to him is tainted - nah. He has the right of free speech - I have the right to think he's wrong - but does it follow that any person who listens to him must be unamerican in some way?

I think he in conversant with that segment - able to hold his own and communicate - but not part of it. That's the thing of being part of a multi-racial family (which I am) you can't be a bigot without biting your own tail.
