Clinton was a liberal Democrat who didn't need the Republican base "values voters" that McCain has been trying to suck up to. This will kill any credibility he had left among social conservatives.

Regardless of your opinion of Dobson and his ilk, they wield substantial influence in terms of Republican turnout on election day. If the RNC had any sense at all, they'd enter negotiations to get John McCain to drop out of the race with as little disturbance as possible.
