U.S. Senator Wants to Revoke Funding From City of Berkeley, Calif., for Vote to Boot Marines

WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., says the City of Berkeley, Calif., no longer deserves federal money.

DeMint was angered after learning that the Berkeley City Council voted this week to tell the U.S. Marine Corps to remove its recruiting station from the city's downtown.

"This is a slap in the face to all brave service men and women and their families," DeMint said in a prepared statement. "The First Amendment gives the City of Berkeley the right to be idiotic, but from now on they should do it with their own money."

"If the city can’t show respect for the Marines that have fought, bled and died for their freedom, Berkeley should not be receiving special taxpayer-funded handouts," he added.

In the meantime, a senior Marine official tells FOX News that the Marine office in Berkeley isn't going anywhere.

"We understand things are different there, but some people just don't get it. This is a part of the military machine that gives them the right to do what they do, but what they are doing is extreme," the official said.

DeMint said he will draft legislation to rescind any earmarks dedicated for the City of Berkeley in the recently passed appropriations bill — which his office tallied to value about $2.1 million. He said that any money taken back would be transferred to the Marines.

I don't think a whole a whole city should be held accountable for the actions of a couple of people, unless of course these morons are re-elected or they were originally elected on platforms that highlighted getting rid of the Marines.

The whole city is kicking them out, so the whole city should feel the consequences of those actions.

And if there are any wanabes that think they have what it takes to be in Uncle Sams Misguided Children they can drive there ass 50 miles to the next recruiting station.

Hell I had to go 80 miles just to get my physical to get in the beloved Corp's, if somebody really wants the USMC that bad they will not be stopped.

Although I would say stay out right now unless you just want your ass in the grass with the grunts, but then again why the hell else would you join the Corp's it sure is hell isnt for the college money you get more in the Chair force.

No, its not the whole city, its city officials. Their the cool-aid drinkers
that get elected in towns like San Francisco and Berkeley who use
their office to do social engineering.
We've seen it all before. They'll go after Christian organizations, the
boy scouts, Army ROTC, military organization, etc.

This is disgraceful. How can you be so against your own country that you will not allow marine recruiters to come by your city. Lets see how long that city can survive without federal money!!!!

It's their right to do this, I really don't see the problem here at all, it isn't like the Marines don't have tons of recruiting centers across the country. I think Berkley is trying to make a strong point about opposing the war and while it is rather extreme, it's perfectly legal and a right. Denying federal funding to the city implies that opposing viewpoints are not allowed and the government will punish you for not following along with their idea of conformity to the status quo.

Things like this are why I love the Bay area, it's so unique, it's truly one of the most American places I've seen and been to.

It's about protesting the government, this recruiting office is an extension of the Military which is a part of the government. Protesting the government's policies through expelling a recruiting office should not mean that a senator on the opposite end of the political spectrum has the right to deny federal funding just because he disagrees with the position of the city. It's really that simple.

And to be honest, even if federal funding were rescinded, I doubt Berkley would suffer much.
