Neither is abortion. What's your point?

Neither is compassion for the handicapped, the endangered species, the Co2 content in the atmosphere or any of the other quasi-religious causes the federal government has taken on. The government has done exactly what the establishment clause was designed to prevent, created systems of thought seasoned with values that they have forced on all of us.

I like the separation of church and state. Now if they would only expand the meaning of "church" to include all do-gooder philosophies that forces me to put money in their collection plate, move my car 4 spaces over, bypass investment opportunities because it will hurt some microscopic animal on a list, etc ad nauseum, I would be a happy man.

The words "separation of church and state" are nowhere in the U.S. Constitution either.

Or "electoral college"

or "judicial review"

or "veto".

The seperation of Church and State is one of the greatest aspects of our Nation. Without it, we would undoubtably have been plagued by the same civil war and general strife that ravaged Europe throughout the middle ages and even into the Industrial Revoloution.

That being said, Christianity is such a part of our culture and way of life that it is truley inseperable from our Nation. Ever wonder why the constitution recognizes the Sabath? The impact of Christmas? Easter?

The greatest benefit from this seperation isn't to prevent 'offending' the non-religious, but to keep the government from screwing up the Church. See Roman History/ History of the Catholic Church.
