The United States Congress is a bicameral body comprising of two houses: House of Representatives and the United States Senate. Out of the two, the US House of Representatives receives representation in the house for members proportional to the population. The United States Senate receives representation from two members of each state. The House of Representatives receives representation based on the population of the state. For e.g., the populous state of California has as many as 53 representatives. The total number of Representatives of United States House of Representatives is fixed at 435. For the Senate, membership is based on the equal representation of each state, regardless of population, for a total membership of 100.
The Texas 22nd District is part of the US House of Representatives. It covers a south-central portion of the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metropolitan area. It includes the cities of Rosenberg and La Marque as well as portions of Missouri City and Pearland, in Fort Bend, Harris, Galveston, and Brazoria counties. 52 percent of poll respondents identified themselves as Republicans, 32 percent as Democrats and 16 percent as independent.
The 2006 Texas 22nd Congressional District saw two elections: A special Election and a general election. In the special election there were five candidates—four Republicans - Shelley Sekula-Gibbs, Don Richardson, former US Representative Steve Stockman and Giannibecego Hoa Tran, and one Libertarian, Bob Smither. The Democrats were not represented with a candidate. Sekula-Gibbs won that race with approximately 63 percent of the vote and was sworn in as a Member of Congress on November 13, 2006.
The general election had three candidates: Democrat and former US Representative Nick Lampson, Libertarian Party candidate Bob Smither, and Republican Sekula-Gibbs. The upcoming election in the year 2008 has some of the known names as candidates. This includes the Republicans Dean Hrbacek , Brian Klock, and Democrat Nick Lampsons among others.
