I've been thinking about this.
It has been about 4 years since it became clear that the War In Iraq would be a prolonged conflict that would certainly cost the lives of many American servicemen. (I excuse most of 2003 when optimism was still reigning).
Yet, during that time something like 1 million plus Americans have either joined the military or reenlisted.
That includes something on the order of 600,000 volunteering to join or stay in the U.S. Army or Marine Corps, both of which have had a vast portion of their forces rotated through Iraq.
My question, if the conflict in Iraq is so bad, then why do so many people keep volunteering?
