    Frustrated...

They dangle a carrot and take it away, and Im sorry, but as a lifelong Democrat.....looks the the Demos will delay or take away.

As a single working mom, this rebate, which I estimate would be about $900 for me, would just beicing on the cake for me. I could afford to do a few things that I wouldnt/couldnt normally do.

And as fast as congress got this bill through (kudoes to them and the pres on this)...looks like the dems in the senate are looking to tack on items that should slow up the progess on this.

First, and agreeable to me, is adding retired persons on the list (shouldnt this have been considered in the first place ?).

Second, from what I understand is to extend unemployement benefits - eh ? Dont we want to encourage the unemployed to get jobs, not give them more benefits to shall we say, extend there stay on benefits ?

I dunno, but Im a little upset just now at the dems in the senate for this.

Am I not understanding this properly ? I quess Im ranting here because like others, I really could use the money, and I work damn frickin hard and by golly...I DESERVE to be rewarded for working hard and supporting not only my kids but my government too.

What do others think of whats going on ?

What's going on, is, it's an election year, and so, all the politicians wanna look good. Anytime they can make you think that they're doing something for you, that makes them look good.

But unfortunately, this rebate, is not good for you. It might be okay in the immediate term, 'cause it'll help pay a few bills. But longer term, "most" of that money is going to China, and so, all that means is, that the dollar will continue to sink and so will your standard of living, and the secondly, it means it'll make it harder for you to get a job 'cause foreign economies will be more competitive.

A cash incentive is a {u]bad[/U] idea. What they should do, is put people to work! A Public Works Project, would be the way to do this "correctly". 'Course, they want to see an "immediate" benefit, but guess what? I predict they're gonna be shi&&in' bricks right around the end of April, and I mean, they're gonna want to do another interest rate cut but that kind of thing gets harder and harder (and, you can't drop the rate below zero percent, right? ) -

So yeah, bad idea. The gov is being really stupid about all this. They're trying to patch the system with band-aids, in the hopes that it'll survive long enough for the longer-term fix to setlle in. My take right now, is that latter piece will be "highly doubtful".

So yeah, I do think, the right way to do this, would be a Public Works Project.

its laundered money that will flood upward. we have to borrow the money for one. this means our grandkids will pay for it. the check writers want you to spend it for two. wouldn't it be wiser to save the maney and wait for the really hard time.

i heard a couple good ideas the other day. one was to stop the tax witholdings in pay checks for six months or so--a no cost immediate temp. solution. the other was to ease or stop charging the federal taxes on energy products--also cost free and immediate.

the fact of the matter is the richest of us that really lost the money in the market and housing industry want the money back. by borrowing this money on the government level, and giving it to the strappped that can't help but spend it, the richest recoup at least half their investment.

I think it's all the first of many Band-aids to come. Band-aids presented as shiny new gifts. I guess I don't have a problem with extending unemployment benefits since I think unemployment is going to go up and it's not necessarily a situation in which we have deadbeats abusing unemployment. The "growth" we've experienced has been partially due to sending jobs off shore. And no--to you bootstrapping republicans--it's NOT a case of the workforce not being prepared for the "new economy." Hell corporations are sending professional services off shore.

The rebate itself is one I won't turn down, but I'd just as soon they fix the problem with more realistic measures, like rolling back tax breaks for the upper income levels.

Wouldn't it be interesting if W had to eat his words on taxes like his father did?

I think the democrats will try to (once again) look like saviors while screwing up everything. They can't help it.

This is meant to be a stimulus package, big bang. It's not meant to fix everything.

I agree that extending unemployment is rediculous. Unemployment is already 26 weeks. Get a job. I have had to use unemployment, I found a job in 5 1/2 weeks. More food stamps? Gimmie a break. The people on the botton of the scale are not going to stimulate the ecomony because they get $50 more a month.

Personally, I own my own company and don't need the money. I plan on giving the check back. My check would amount to $1,800.00. I would rather see the deficit lowered. I would suggest that others could put their money where their mouth is as well.
If you need the money- keep it, if you don't - give it back.

The dems are using this package to assert their own agenda and once again it is the american people that will suffer.

One thing I think should happen is repairing our roads, waterways, electic, alternitive fuel sources - all of these would create jobs. Presidents in the past have done this, and it worked.

Also, I think there should be tax breaks for companies who keep jobs in the USA and the companies who move jobs out of the country should pay a hefty penalty and higher taxes. Run 'em out of business, someone else will rise up and take their place.

    It's time Americans come first.

I applaud you for giving the money back, but you have to remember this was a bi-partisian deal, not a demo deal, backed by the Pres. In fact, dems took OUT of the package to see this get through faster.

Its the damn Senate Demos who are threatening to muck it up. That pisses me off.

Ive been paying attention and trying to figure the whole mess out. Davo, your bandaid analogy is a great one, and yes, Id like the bigger problems solved....but.....

I can use the cash, dammit!

**hangs head in embarrassment at her selfishness**.......not.

Im tired of all this bipartisian crap and trying to stick not so great stuff onto good stuff to get it passed. I welcome the retirees getting a piece of this pie, but if you werent working in 2007 in order to qualify, and you still are not working in 2008, changes are something is more wrong then this rebate is going to fix...:whistling:

This money is not free money owned by the government. This money is the tax paying publics money. If they give some back to tax payers it is not money given by the government to those people! It is merely a reduction of the money paid by tax payers. To give someof this money to people that did not pay taxes during that tax year is wrong!! It is socialism in it's most extreme. I do not pay taxes in order for that money to then be handed to someone else.

Yes, I know. I agree they worked to get it done. And rather quickly. My point is the Senate wants some glory of their own.

I think everyone agrees that we need to change a lot of programs, but attaching any of that to a stimulas will solve nothing. These are seperate issues.

I also agree this is simply a band-aid. But let us not forget how much we have spent in Iraq. It would be nice to help the Americans for once. But I also have to wonder at what cost?

    I agree completely.

People need to get a job, go to school, do something with their lives. The welfare system is a drain on our economy, I see no need to drain it further.
