Giuliani 'ran like a coward on 9/11'

Giuliani 'ran like a coward on 9/11'

A New York Fire Department official says former mayor Rudy Giuliani decided 'which direction he was going to run' on September 11, 2001.

"We want America to know that [the Giuliani campaign] is lying to America and to the American pubic," New York Fire Department Deputy Chief Jim Riches said Tuesday at a rally organized by the families of the firefighters killed on Sept. 11 in Orlando.

"Telling all of Florida that the New York City Fire Department backs him, when that's another lie," Riches added.

Riches said the Republican presidential candidate had to make many decisions. "Yet, the decision he made was, which direction he was going to run. And he ran north, and that's all he did."

The NY firefighter then added that the US media portrayed Giuliani as a hero.

"America stay calm and everything will be alright. We will pull through this," Riches quoted the former New York mayor as saying on September 11.

He concluded that the 63-year-old candidate 'ran like a coward' and that's all he did.

Rudy Giuliani, who is heavily influenced by a group of hawkish neoconservatives, has campaigned strongly on his leadership during the terrorist attacks on New York.

I'd run like hell too if there was a 747 coming down on my head. The first law of life is self preservation.

What bugs me most about the hypocracy of Guiliani and those that support him without looking at his whole "reign" is that 9/11 happened in his city under his watch. People blame Nagin for New Orleans, and I do to for the most part, but no one says anything about 9/11 happening under Guiliani.

What's wrong with you, that would be unpatriotic....oh wait, that isn't Guilianni that says that....

its funny, i've done a complete 180 on rudy. i WANTED him to run for prez, just so i could vote for him. now i think i'd vote for huckabee first, and thats saying a LOT. if you want a real telling look at rudy, read the vanity fair article on him. it was either the issue out now or one or two before. its online too. its REAL frightening, and basically paints him as the most coniving, scheming, shady politician ever. makes bush look like ghandi.

When I saw the video feed after the tragedy I saw quite a few police, firefighters, EMS and just plain citizens running from the devestation. If Giuliani ran with the rest he gets an A+ for common sense.

Exactly right. How can one be faulted for not standing still while a building was getting ready to fall on them?

He had every right, and perhaps even a duty, to utilize the safety of NYPDs command bunker but he chose to go were the action was taking place and put his life in jeopardy. I may disagree with some of his political positions but he is a man of courage and character.

As I recall Giuliani had some labor disagreements with FDNY. Does anyone besides me think that it's a possible motive to accuse Giuliani of cowardice?

As much as I dislike most everything about him, I don't think cowardice is an apt tag for him. I would like to see the bravado of some here in the same situation that he was in. They remind me of the monday morning generals.
