I think this is actually very close to many Czechs' feelings about our president(s); except, being the kind of country we are, it can hardly be about "awe" and "power", needless to say *chuckle* but the symbolism is extremely important. According to what I heard, this worked to a large extent even in the pre-1989 Czechoslovakia when our presidents were basically Moscow's slaves. Yet even some of the most anti-regime dissidents frowned upon mocking the president, or, the office the guy in charge represented.
Of course, our presidents live here, so that sort of oozes respect, I suppose.
I think we were the only Eastern Bloc country that was "allowed" to keep the president's office. The others just had Prime Ministers who usually happened to be the leaders of the local Communist party as well.
