Gallup Poll:President Bush the Most Admired Man in America

I don't have the link with me, but I heard on the news over the Christmas holiday that in the Gallup organizations annual poll, President Bush won the most votes as the most admired man in America.

Assuming this was true, how does it square with the presidents supposed 30% approval rating.

Or do people disapprove of the job the president is doing but admire him for sticking to his guns despite massive opposition?

Well he scored his lowest percentage yet (near as I can tell the lowest for a sitting president ever), the president has been most admired every year since 1981 and Hillary got double the votes he did and lost out only becuase of gender. Barak Obama made the cut as well....not so much the Republican field.

Does admired have a different meaning in the US vernacular?

Cause here in Canada we don't even admire 'good' politicians. They rank somewhere on the respect meter between circus freaks and door-to-door Jehovas Witnesses.

In this case admired means...in awe of the power of the office rather then the man.

Maybe it means that even though he is such a glaring absolute failure of a President in terms of the state of the Economy, the War, National Unity, and Foreign Policy.....he is admired for the fact that he still hasn't flung himself off the top of the Capitol Dome...

I think this is actually very close to many Czechs' feelings about our president(s); except, being the kind of country we are, it can hardly be about "awe" and "power", needless to say *chuckle* but the symbolism is extremely important. According to what I heard, this worked to a large extent even in the pre-1989 Czechoslovakia when our presidents were basically Moscow's slaves. Yet even some of the most anti-regime dissidents frowned upon mocking the president, or, the office the guy in charge represented.

Of course, our presidents live here, so that sort of oozes respect, I suppose.

I think we were the only Eastern Bloc country that was "allowed" to keep the president's office. The others just had Prime Ministers who usually happened to be the leaders of the local Communist party as well.

I guess that might make sense. I wouldn't take the PM of Canada's job if they paid me double. It's a thankless, difficult job that is best served by grey, chubby policy wonks.
