    What is a Patriot?

Hello all. I have a simple question. Can you tell me what a patriot is? Is a patriot someone who follows the ideals and constitutions of their country or is a patriot someone who follows the country's leaders (those who are supposedly representing the constitution). It seems these days the two are mutually exclusive.

    Re: What is a Patriot?

A person with sheepish tendencies who subscribes to identity based politics and fashions a political consciousness centered on and placing the artificial nation state (an anachronism) as well as its religion - nationalism as the supreme.

And then this person feels real good about doing so and also is acknowledged by other sheep.

is a patriot someone who follows the country's leaders (those who are supposedly representing the constitution) <<<<< nationalist

Every man who parrots the cry of ’stand by the President’ without adding the proviso ’so far as he serves the Republic’ takes an attitude as essentially unmanly as that of any Stuart royalist who championed the doctrine that the King could do no wrong. No self-respecting and intelligent free man could take such an attitude.

    Re: What is a Patriot?

So people who say it is unpatriotic to follow the president (Bush) are actually saying that it is un-nationalistic?

A true patriot will defend their country and the values that that country represents, to the death and beyond if possible. Look at some of the writings of the founding fathers, I would start with the Constitution.

    Bush is no patriot!

    Re: What is a Patriot?

A Patriot will defend with his or her life, his or her fellow citizens (not territories abroad, not polticians at home, not the Republineocontarian or Democratic invertibrates) but fellow citizens IF they are threatened by unconstitutional ideals, laws, or physical oppression no matter what the source.

A Patriot will defend with his or her life, the United States if directly attacked by a force that can be retalited against so as to eliminate future threats. Which means if 15 Saudiis attack the US on 911, we can't go give democracy and freedom to the Iraqiis.

    Bush is no Patriot Indeed!!!!!

I am a patriot. I love this land and the documents that started it all. In no way would I EVER hold any person to be above or beyond those documents.

    Re: What is a Patriot?

A patriot is a person who follows the ideals and constitution of his or her country and stands up for his or her belief in them. They do not have to necessarily believe in what their politicians preach or in what their leaders say. A patriot will sacrifice almost all and will fight for their country when a just cause arises. That is a true patriot.

That would be a nationalist. A patriot is someone who loves his country but doesn't think it should dominate others.

    Re: What is a Patriot?

Patriotism - I want my country to be the best it can be, and will do anything in my power to make it the best it can be. I am happy when we act well and saddened when we act badly.

Nationalsim - my country is automatically the best. Naturally. It doesn't have to do anything, be anything or meet any criteria whatsoever to earn this title, it is a natural occurance. Whatever actions my country does abroad are irrelevant, it is automatically what I will support. Any action which benefits us is good, regardless of any objective 'right' or 'wrong' or 'law'.
