Not gonna try to argue against that.

Me personally, as I read that statistics stuff, I realized that I might not want to have a gun after all. Aw well, horses for courses.
Yes some common sense should play a part in the decision. There may be a different answer to the question whether you need a gun or not but that question must be answered by you not someone else.

Okay having a gun might help you in this one theoretical situation, but it doesn't prove or suggest that you are better off having a gun. The benefit of being able to shoot an intruder is outweighed by all the other situations where somebody in your household is at increased risk for dying due to your having a gun.
You are using statistics as if they are prophecies. The fact is that the statistics you are citing reflect that a certain segment of the population chooses to own a gun but not to do what is necessary to own it safely. I can completely control whether my children have access to my gun, the key that is needed to unlock it, or the ammunition. I can address all of the things that ultimately cause the senseless and tragic deaths in gun-owning households by being diligent and responsible. I can reduce the risks posed to my family by my shotgun to the unlikely scenario that the ammunition somehow spontaneously explodes (and even that might not be much of a problem, as I keep the ammunition in a firebox, which is made of cement). If you cannot manage the risks posed by your guns, then you probably should not own a gun, you're right. Because the statistics you like so much do in fact show that carelessness and gun ownership are very dangerous-- and unfortunately common --bedfellows.

well yes you'd want to make sure your family is safe, but usually once the intruder knows someone is home, they leave, without you having to confront them.

i bring up taylor because i thought criminals just want money, not glory. if that was the case, then they would have left as soon as they realized taylor was home. but they didn't, they shot first, probably think taylor had a gun, and was about to use it any second. and IF taylor had had a gun, MAYBE he would have shot first. and MAYBE he would have hit the guy with the gun first, killing him, in the dark. yea, sounds fool proof.

Here are a couple of facts about the Taylor murder.
Sean Taylor had a previous gun violation and was unable to legally own a gun. Ergo he was left trying to defend himself with a machete.
The intruders kicked in the locked bedroom door where Sean his girlfriend and baby were holed up. Mr. Taylor was not trying to do anything more than survive an attack by thugs and unfortunately he didn't make it. We can at least be thankful that they have apprehended the murdering scum.
This is my analogy about the murder: Sean Taylor was a young man with a bright future that was snuffed out by aggressive young toughs who were intent on inflicting bodily harm.

Yeah...me personally, yes, I would lock myself in a room and allow someone to entirely loot my house as long as they didn't try to come into the room I was in with my family.

    And my shotgun.

since when are common citizens trained in tactical law enforecment situations, like taking down an armed killer in a crowded public building? i forgot all U.S. citizens have to go through S.W.A.T. training before the age of 18.
Hmmmm...anyone besides Nick willing to trade the possibility of being able to defend themselves for the certainty of being a victim?

That's a summation, not an analogy.

Hey Nick, isn't that what "they" say to do? :waving:
