Bush signs landmark executive order increasing power over federal agencies

    Raw Story | January 30, 2007

President George W. Bush has given his administration a boost in how the government regulates key issues such as civil rights and the environment, RAW STORY has learned The New York Times will report on its Tuesday front page.

The President "signed a directive that gives the White House much greater control over the rules that the federal government develops to regulate public health, safety," privacy and other issues, writes Robert Pear for the Times.

Pear reports that "in an executive order published last week in the Federal Register, Bush said that each federal agency must have a regulatory policy office run by a political appointee" who will monitor the creation of process and procedures and the associated documentation.

"The White House will thus have a gatekeeper in each agency," Pear writes, "to analyze the costs and benefits of new rules and to make sure they carry out the president's priorities."

Thought Police: HR 1955 turns Patriotic Americans into Terrorists

Ward Churchill: "HR 1955, as I understand it, provides a basis for subjective interpretation of dissident speech that allows those in power to criminally penalize anything they considered to be particularly effective in terms of galvanizing an opposition that might conceivably in some sense disrupt or destabilized the status quo, so it's to keep everything in that nice sanitized arena that I was just talking about where you're actually a collateral functionary of the state by participating."

I'm tired of hearing how all of these things "could possibly be used" in ways that label protesters as terrorists, or "might one day" be used to turn the military against American citizens. First, to read these laws like that, you have to take the loosest of all loose interpretations. Secondly, do you honestly think the Supreme Court would allow protesters to be arrested and charged as terrorists? If you find any examples of these laws actually being used in such fashion, thats one thing, but I'm tired of hearing how they might be used.

The references you gave in my opinion are barely adequate. I also agree that just because a law or executive order can be loosely interpreted in such a way, does not nessesarily mean it will be used in that way, like the previouos post said, the supreme court would never allow it. I liked the overall post though.
