An idea I once had as a teenager, regarding Soc Sec, Disability, and Welfare

When I was younger, I was in essence, an extremist on most issues (some lib, some con).

I've outgrown that considerably... however, my brain keeps
going back to one idea I had that makes sense to me.

I believe that when we hit the required age to collect Social Security, put on Disability, or collect Welfare we're faced with the following ultimatum (which can be changed every six months):

If you collect assistance, you automatically lose your right to vote.

A measure that extreme would stop politicking to the poor (read: lazy welfare mothers), to the old, and those who claim that they're "too crazy to work". The voice of the people would be the voice of the working American.

I think Michael Savage summed it up best, "One working man, one vote".

Wow, what other rights would people lose under your plans? Why shouldn't a disabled war veteran that is not abe to work not be allowed to vote. Sounds like very poor thinking on your part.

Oh, I agree that the logic doesn't work... and that we'd have some kind of new office of "government assistance decision" or something of that nature.

Also, technically speaking, voting is a right that is taken away from convicted thieves... by accepting my tax dollars, you're stealing a large portion of my paycheck.

How about just voting in the first place? People can complain about how too much of this and that (for me, spending) is occurring, but yet, yesterday, billions and billions of dollars were spent in my state with 10% of the registered voters turning out. That means it takes just over 5% to pass a law.

    Voting isn't a right.

Therefore restricting the privelege to those that are productive in the nation doesn't cost anyone their rights.

Here's some basic rules voting should follow:

    1) Can't read? Can't vote.

    2) Don't spik de English? Then you can't vote.

    3) Been on public assistance/unemployment/socialist security more than three months in the last ten? Can't vote.

    4) Federal/State employee, and not in the military or police? Can't vote. You want to vote? Find a real job.

    5) Didn't bring your ID showing legal residency status to your polling place? Go home and get it, cuz you ain't voting without it.

    6) Want an absentee ballot? You'd better be in the hospital, 'cause lazy people don't deserve them.

    7) Delinquent on taxes? We'll hold a ballot for you until the polls close, okay? Get that account settled.

    ===========

    Other reforms...

Moving tax filing deadline day to October 31. That'll be sure to get more voters out to the polls the next week.

You have money you want to contribute to a candidate? Go ahead. It's your money, and none of business. But it is our business who the candidate is receiving money from, so we'll ask him. We'd never dream of inhibiting your freedom, though.

Voting isn't a right; it's a priveledge. Not once do the founding fathers ever mention voting as a right. It's not in the Declaration of Independence and it isn't in the Bill of Rights.

When my father turned 18 (in 1962) he had to write a legible paragraph in English before he was allowed to vote.

Based on that about 10% of the nation would have voting rights these days.
