    Will this divide us?

Is this what the right will use to divide us and steal power again? I believe that illegal is illegal. If I commit a crime I expect to get punished if I'm caught, not rewarded.
If these people wish to be here let them go through the process.

It is a rare position for former Sen. John Edwards. On the road to the White House, the North Carolinian has frequently positioned himself as the most progressive candidate among the Democratic frontrunners.
But as part of an increasingly aggressive push to make up ground in the race, he has staked out a position on immigration that is to the right of his chief primary opponents.
At the debate and on ABC's This Week this past Sunday, Edwards drew a distinction between himself and Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, saying he disagreed with New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer's proposal to grant drivers licenses to undocumented immigrants. Clinton backs the proposal as a way of solving crimes and promoting road safety.
Moreover, Edwards said that while states should have say over the issue until comprehensive reform can be passed, once reform is enacted, licenses should only be granted to those immigrants who are on the path to citizenship.

Wait a minute, this is edwards blowing smoke & it somehow might allow the right to "steal power again"?

You might jump over to the last handful of pages in the tax cut thread. The boom is over, and there will be an economic pinch. That's why the pressure is on to regulate immigration.

No, the right will steal power only if we let them divide us on the immigration issue.

It's far more complicated than that.

Immigration is still a polzarizing issue, Edwards is a non-entity compared to Clinton anyway. I don't see how Edwards using this tactic is any different from CLinton's right move a few months back. The right will win on issues if Clinton keeps playing her "poor girl" card. Either way, Clinton has the nomination and can annialate Guiliani on a straight character ticket. Steal the election? That only works when the vote is close, which it won't be in 2008.

Fair question, AceBass, but the Right will steal power even if they have to cheat. I wouldn't put it past them to rely on their stacked-for-stupid Supreme Court to settle a presidential election in a contested state on behalf of the right-wing candidate. I know that sounds crazy, but I have a feeling they might try that some day.

I always wondered what would happen had Kerry won the popular vote, and he's staked the Supreme deck since then. With this administration nothing would surprise me.

Spoken like a true Clinton supporter and I will have to say should she get the nod I will vote for her, but right now I hope JRE is my choice. The main thing is we don't need to kill ourselves during the primary while the rightwing is making notes...

What if the administration raised taxes and pulled out of Iraq while investing in alternative energy, would that surprise you?
