Once again last night, as he has done so many times before, our fearless leader showed me the way. He opened doors I didn't even know existed onto expansive new vistas I had never imagined. And he did so with such elegance, such grace, such clarity and ease. I find myself flabbergasted at his latest triumph.
This morning on the way in, I heard an NPR reporter explain to me that Bush had given a speech, and told us all about the gains that we had made in Iraq. And then I heard the recorded voice of our leader himself:
"Because of this success...we have now reached the point where we can maintain our security gains with fewer American forces."
Eureka! How had I overlooked the obvious? This is George Bush we're talking about here, after all. The solution was built in to his character, and should have been obvious the day he landed on the aircraft carrier:
CLAIM VICTORY!!!
We can now leave because we have won!
Oh, thank God. Here I thought we would have to pull out in disgrace, whipped by social forces we never had a chance against, that seemingly everybody but Bush was well aware of. How simple of me. Fire up the TV cameras, position the American flag just so behind his shoulder, conjure up your best sincere look (which always has an element of a smug smirk in it for those of us willing to see it), and announce that we have achieved our goals, and therefore we can now start to pull our troops out.
I don't know what I was so worried about. Somehow I had failed to realize that our final success over there was no more dependent upon reality than our initial decision to go to war in the first place. That our mission would end in glorious victory whenever we were ready. That we could reckon the whole experience a shining example of what Americans can accomplish if we put our minds to it, with the help of a little fantasyland propaganda....George's specialty from day one.
I really do feel like a simpleton for not realizing that a long time ago.
