Thread: When Should We Leave?

Should we stay the course, give it a try? See if it will work?

Should we begin a long and drawn out exit?

Should we lick our wounds and just leave?

I understand every ones reasons for what we should do in Iraq. I certainly would be nuts to say that I can agree with them all. That just makes no sense.

What are we to do, why should we believe you.

I am with Warner, I think that with planning, we could start to move troops out by Christmas, man what a gift. But then what happens, do more Iraqi's die because we left, or will as many die because we stayed?

How do we respond to those who sponsored this war. Should they be hero's, criminals, or something in between?

Any answers??

The answer to your question is "both". Stay, and things will continue to go as bad as they are, or get even worse, with more and more americans dying for a lie and a lost cause. Leave, and things will get worse for the Iraqi people. They will get worse no matter when the US leaves. Bush & Co. didn't think about all of this (and they weren't trying to) before invading Iraq. Now, things are as hopeless as a penny with a hole in it, and the US is no less than up to their heads in it.

Things will get worse in Iraq when we leave, just like they got worse in Vietnam when we left. But now Vietnam is all fine and dandy, Bush says, and we won too! Bush says. So we can leave Iraq, and in 30 years everything will be fine and we can say we won.

Dividing Iraq would be highly irresponsible. THe US can't just come in a country and hurry out by dividing it based on it's understanding.

Splinter states mean more Afghanistans out there.

Actually although I once favoured partition I don't now agree, it's up to the Iraqi government to decide if they want to stay united or not, we, us Brits, have done enough abitarily dividing up of nations. There is bound to be some territory that more than one side wants to have and like Kashmir between India and Pakistan it will be a running sore and probably mean more people fleeing their homes and 'ethnic cleansing'.

I wish the surge had worked, had brought some level of stability but I think it is doomed because for it to have any chance of working, the Iraqis have to be persuaded America will stay there for at least a generation, since I see no hope of that, maybe America should follow us Brits out. Oh and we should both provide sanctuary for those Iraqis who were brave enough to help us and now are in danger of their lives because they are seen as collaborators.

I mostly agree with Magpie.

I would stay until they ask us to leave or until international terror becomes totally ineffective and contained.

Iraq ia a prime location for us to do important work, but making Iraq into a western democracy must cease being our focus in the next year.

We also don't need 130,000 troops there. Bring 60,000 home, re-deploy 20,000 to Afghanistan, leave 50,000 in Iraq with a modified mission.

Yes leaving will cause some duration, for a shot period of time. That may not be the case however.

The Iraqi's may find unity in rebuilding their country. They lived together before, both Shea and Sunni, and I am sure that they can again.

The way I see it, right now they have a puppet government and they know it. They are as about as sovereign as Texas.

I say that it's time to plan a 100% pull out or we will always be killing or at least responsible for the death of the Iraqi's for many many years to come.

if you don't understand why we are there, how can you plan or discuss an exit strategy?
