Turns out that NASA is revising it's figures on just how much global warming the world will experience. And the reason they are revising the figures is a Y2K bug that caused their estimate to be wrong - how ironic.
Now it is not like this is the first time that estimates about global warming have been reduced. Just the first time as a result of Y2K. Here is a quote from a second article (the first actually follows).
Even the bureaucrats who permanently staff the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the United Nations body that has been the principal advocate of the global warming theory, have been forced to admit that its temperature predictions have been wrong. In fact, it has been forced to revise its projections repeatedly. In 1990, the IPCC predicted that global temperatures would rise 6· F by 2100. Then, in 1992, realizing that the temperature wasn't increasing anywhere near that rate, the IPCC developed with a new climate model that predicted a temperature increase of 5· F by 2100. Just three years later, in 1995, the IPCC again adjusted its warming projection downward, forecasting that temperatures would rise less than 2· F, a noticeable increase but hardly a cause for concern.1 Natural temperature increases of 3 to 4· F have occurred in the past, such as in the 11th century A.D. and around 5000 B.C. These have generally benefited humanity by prolonging growing seasons and promoting more mild weather.
National Policy Analysis #218: Buenos Aires Conference On Global Warming: Much Ado About Nothing - October 1998
Here is the article:
I hope the story is accurate. I have been unable to find it on any mainstream news outlets.wouldn’t you know it, the warmest year on record for the world wasn’t 1998 so much it was 1934, or just 20 or so years after the automobile began seeing widespread use
NASA has now silently released corrected figures, and the changes are truly astounding. The warmest year on record is now 1934. 1998 (long trumpeted by the media as record-breaking) moves to second place. 1921 takes third. In fact, 5 of the 10 warmest years on record now all occur before World War II. Anthony Watts has put the new data in chart form, along with a more detailed summary of the eventsAvert your eyes, global warming zealots. If Al Gore says there’s a scientific consensus about global warming then damn it there is a scientific consensus, and no amount of backpedaling by the lamers at NASA is going to prove otherwise
The effect of the correction on global temperatures is minor (some 1-2% less warming than originally thought), but the effect on the US global warming propaganda machine could be huge.
But let’s set sarcasm aside and focus on the most ironic part of this story. You know what caused this error at NASA? A Y2K< bug. Meaning that the effects of one gigantically over-hyped global armaggedon non-issue may have just taken the wind out of the sails of another
