The problem you have here is that the people who support this war are now throroughly entrenched in that position. They can't move away from it without having their whole political/philosophical structure collapse. Many of the moderates (and those on the left) have been saying that a western style democracy might not work in Iraq. Rather than listen, and looking to see if there was any validity to this assertion, those on the right have been arguing that this assertion (by opponents of this occupation) is tantamount to racism. They have blindly ignored the centuries of history in this region in the hopes that their faith in the cult of infallability surrounding this President (and his administration) would be enough. It's a case of not believing that Santa Claus doesn't exist, because if they acknowldege this to be true then they would be doomed to a world in which they will get socks and underwear for Christmas rather than the Red Ryder BB gun.
The right will continue to deny and delay, it's the only tactic they have left... to make this war someone else's problem. It's also the only way they can salvage any FRACTION of the Bush legacy.
