The vast majority of Americans have never taken a course in economics and have, quite literally, no understanding of the complexities of our economic system, leaving them hopelessly naive and gullible, easily manipulated, and conversationally stupid on the subject. While there is a great degree of normative difference in economics, liberal and conservative alike agree on the fundamental principles of how the economy functions. Politicians, however, seem to pay very little attention and the public pays even less.
So my question is, what does this mean for the longterm health of the American economy? People aren't saving. The middle classes are credit-dependent and the lower classes are government-service dependent. Meanwhile, the people that understand the economy, also understand the people's ignorance, and so we see an awful lot of predatory activity coming from our banks and corporations.
