It has long been claimed by this administration that we were attacked on 9/11 because the terrorists “hate our freedoms”. I, at first when I heard this, believed it like almost every other guy because I was young, scared, and angry. But as I got older and started to get interested in history I’ve begun to doubt this explanation. If the terrorists really hated our democracy and way of life, then why have they not attacked other democracies such as Sweden, South Korea, Germany, France, Japan, or others? The only countries Al Qaida or similar Islamic extremist groups have targeted in serious attacks on their own soil are those that are allies of Israel, have a prolific influence in Middle Eastern Affairs, or are part of the coalition forces in Iraq or Afghanistan.
The United States has had a long history of involvement in the Middle East that dates back to the 1950’s. The U.S. recognized Israel in 1948 and ever since 1968 has given it huge amounts of military armnaments. U.S. involvement in the Middle East does not end with just Israel. The USA has overthrown governments worldwide, but it has mostly focused on Middle Eastern nations because of the vast amounts of oil in the region. Oil has been the main focus of U.S. national security policy for almost half a century. The CIA and M16 coup in Iran that overthrew Prime Minister Mohammed Mosadegh is but one example. Now why do you think he was overthrown? Because he wanted to nationalise the country’s oil industry. And that is something the United States would not allow. The USA’s influence in governments of the Middle East is not the only thing. It also has tremendous economic influence in the Middle East and throughout the world. The United States’s popular culture, including it’s fashions, t.v. shows, movies, and music are extremely popular. But it seems that their hatred for our popular culture is a reaction towards our foreign policy.
Now I am in now way condoning attacks on innocent civilians. I am simpley trying to determine the source of all this hate towards us. And it seems that it is our foreign policy, whether our foreign policy is justified or not, it makes allot of people angry. And that’s why I cannot accept that we were attacked because they hate our way of life. Well, I’ve had my say, what do you guys think?
