Thread: What Was/Is The Bigger Threat To America?

Lots of Bush administration crimes have been defended on the notion that the current terror threat is so ectreme that is requires torture, restrictions on civil liberties, etc.

But, this threat is not that extreme in our nation's history if you ask me.

We faced down the entire Soviet nuclear arsenal without embracing these violations of the Constitution, international law, federal law, etc.

So which threat is greater? Bin Laden ith a "loose nuke" or a Soviet premier ranting and banging his shoe on the table at the UN with a large arsenal of weapons and the ICBM's to deliver them at the touch of a button?

A loose nuke of course. The Soviets never showed that they were willing to die and take the world with them to spread their ideology.

Dealings with the Soviets also allowed for diplomatic solutions. If AQ is willing to set up a country that is recognized by a global body and open diplomatic talks perhaps there would be room for comparison. If the Soviets took the methods of AQ none of us would be here to discuss this absurdity.

If AQ was firmly entrenched in Afganistan and the Taliban was still in control there, there is no doubt in my mind that AQ would be so big and so very strong now. They attacked the US and took thousands of lives and reaked such fear and havock on the US. There would have been such a stream of young terrorist wannabes flooding into Afganistan. Thank god that scenario did not happen.
