The UN can only ASK its member nations to impose sanctions, use their own military, etc, etc,

The U.S. regularly flicks the U.N. off like a mosquito and does whatever it wants. If the U.S. was about enforcing U.N. resolutions, then the U.S. would, by any rational train of thought, do so only at the behest of the U.N., and not in conflict with the expressed wishes of the U.N.
Personally, I don't harbor any illusions about the hypocrisy of the U.N. Very rarely has it functioned as anyone would hope.
My comments about the U.S. pretty much ignoring the U.N. are relevant as a rebuttal to the argument that we were somehow serving U.N. interests by invading Iraq. The only time the U.S. serves U.N. interests is when those interests coincidentally coincide with those of the U.S.
Not to mention that anyone who regularly cites U.N. resolutions as a justification for invading Iraq is almost certainly exactly the type of person who will turn around and cry, "Fuck the U.N.!" as soon as the U.N. comes up with something they don't like, and exhorts their leadership to steamroll past the U.N. and plow the enemy du jour into the ground. "We're Americans! Fuck them! We should just fuckin nuke'em! Yeah, man! Yeehaw!"
"Wait, I mean... we were enforcing a U.N. resolution... yeah that's the ticket..."
Um, just to inform you. The only time ANY country acts with the UN its because their own nations beliefs coincide. Your making the US seem arrogant when in fact all member nations do that.
I didn't mean to disagree with what you say here. Like I said, I don't harbor any illusions about the hypocrisy of the U.N. I don't blame the U.S. or anyone else for pretty much doing what they need to do without a lot of concern for the U.N.
Again, my response was aimed at people who claim U.N. resolutions as a justification for Iraq. And the hypocrisy I meant to illustrate belongs to those people. The U.S., as you mentioned, is no more or less hypocritical than any other nation when it comes to dealing with the U.N.
