    Hate Crime?

A hate or bias crime is an unlawful act committed against a person, group or place that is motivated by hate or bias.
To be more specific, the NYPD uses the following guideline: A hate crime is any offense or unlawful act that is motivated in whole or part by a person's, a group's or a place's identification with a particular race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, gender or age.

    What is a Hate Crime?

Hey, I've got a question, if it's already a crime, why does it also have to be a 'hate crime'?

If you murder someone, is that not based on 'hate', or do you have to 'hate' color, creed or religion for it to be a 'hate' crime? Does 'hate' crime legislation make sense to anyone?

Well, if a bunch of white guys jump a black guy in a bar, it's a crime. If they jump him in a bar because he's black, and they make that explicitly clear, it's a hate crime. It comews down to the motivation. Hating someone is not a good enough reason to hurt them.

So? If I, along with a group of my friends, jumped a guy at a bar who happened to be the same color as me, isn't that an act of hate? So what if he's somehow different, it's already a frikken crime.

Well, are you jumping him because of his race?

Why, will he get his ass kicked more or less if I hate him for his race or for his under-roos?

What if I jump a white chick just because I hate her? Is that a hate crime or does the chick have to be black. Because I only hate white chicks. I don't hate black chicks, so why would it be a hate crime?

It was the original question, the one I'm trying to get an answer for, what should my motivation matter if it's already a crime?

It would be viewed as a hate crime regardless of the white man's reasons for jumping a black man...

hate crime laws were enacted to help prevent violence or vandalism brought on by hatred for another race, religion, sexuality, etc. By adding the extra penalties on hate related and motivated crimes we are trying to prevent these crimes.

However, you can certainly make a case for the fairness or effectiveness of said laws.
