I'd love to say this is well deserved and all that crap but we all know that isn't the case. This is another kick at the last adminstration. Then again ... maybe the thought process is that after the war mongering of Bush and Company that just the simplicity of talking to and working with other nations to promote stability and peace is enough.

Granted we're now granted the gift of hindsight but Arafat won this award in the 90s.

Either way, I ain't going to bitch much about it. It's intent is to promote peace and even if they do get it wrong now and again, whatever. I look at it along the same lines as Gold Glove awards in the MLB

The Nobel Prize has been a joke for a long time, in 2007 Al Gore won over people like this Woman

    Irena Sendler

There recently was a death of a 98 year-old lady named Irena. During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the Warsaw Ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist. She had an 'ulterior motive' ... She KNEW what the Nazi's plans were for the Jews, (being German.) Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried and she carried in the back of her truck a burlap sack, (for larger kids..) She also had a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto. The soldiers of course wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking covered the kids/infants noises.. During her time of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants. She was caught, and the Nazi's broke both her legs, arms and beat her severely. Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids sh e smuggled out and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard. After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived it and reunited the family. Most had been gassed. Those kids she helped got placed into foster family homes or adopted.

In 2007 Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize .. She was not selected.

Al Gore won, for a slide show on Global Warming.

I agree with Ronster. There are many people much more deserving than Obama. Anyone can be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. As an example Saddam Hussein was once nominated. The Peace Prize has become a joke.

I think that would be incorrect and highly politicized on those grounds along.

Now again, I'm not FOR Bush - I voted against him in 2004 largely because of the war. You will find no such argument from me that the war was entirely right (although I do think in hindsight there was some benefits, but this is neither the thread nor time to get into this).

The reason I say this is because one of the things I really liked about Bush was that he was extremely proactive with AIDS in Africa. You could likely make a likely hot debate in saying that he has had the biggest positive impact in Africa in the past 50 years from any non-African politician.

I'm not saying Bush was a good president nor that I agree or disagree with anything he did. From the standpoint of Global Peace however I do think that it's fair to say for the stuff we need to check off on the "con" column there are some "pros" there as well. I'm not trying to say that one act rationalizes another, just trying to say looking at the holistic picture he wasn't a 0/100.

This is an award for not being Bush. Most Americans have no idea how detested the last administration was outside of the US. Just being willing to listen and talk with other nations was enough in the eyes of the committee to warrant the award. I personally believe that the award is premature and unwarranted at this point, and I voted for the guy. In addition, it adds unneeded pressure to accomplish something of great substance in an administration that is still learning it way. Maybe, they should have selected the American people, for being smart enough to choose a different course and let Obama prove himself before issuing the award to him.

I couldn't agree more. I don't personally think he's done anything to deserve this, but it does make a strong point about how little Americans have to do to garner the appreciation of the world.

If Obama is for peace, why are we still fighting wars he promised we'd be out of..?

And today he meets with his generals and congressional leaders to decide how to wage war in Afghanistan.
