    Open letter to US Socialists

If you are a citizen/resident of the US and you want a move toward socialism then this is a note for you.

You think that there are a whole bunch of suffering people out there that need to be saved. You think that the best way to save these people is to get me to pay for it.

If you see suffering people then do something about it yourself. If you think this suffering is so great and that other people should pay for it then it should not be too hard for you to get people to open their checkbooks. Go out and raise some money for these suffering people!

If the issue is important then you will raise plenty of money and you will have solved the problem.

If the issue is not important enough for you to get anyone to open their checkbooks voluntarily then it is certainly not important enough to force others to pay for it with the threat of punishment.

If you are a US socialist and you have tried these things then let me know how it worked out.

If you are a US non-socialist and you have something to add, then please do.

And you think calling people "socialist" who don't think of themselves as socialist, but perhaps as liberals or democrats, is a great way to start off a dialogue?

No. The letter is to socialists. If you do not call yourself a socialist then it is not to you. Duh.

And who on this board has ever called themselves a "socialist"? Anyone?

I wrote my senior's thesis on an old Maryland chuch that was part of the underground railroad. Does that mean I'm in actuality an old Maryland church?

There are several people from other countries who do. But I was only concerned with finding the ones in the US. That's why I gave it that title.

Good luck with that. Most people will just assume you're being insulting. Plenty of folks on this board call anyone with even slight left leaning politics a "socialist". Hell, all the libertarians call absolutely EVERYONE not a libertarian a "socialist". So you can see where it might seem as a sidelong insult to people on the Left.
