I myself don't see this occuring, I can't believe that ANYONE is THAT evil....I fundamentally disagree with almost everything the W Administration stands for, but I can't see them deliberately allowing what amounts to mass murder of American citizens in order to further their political survival.

It's funny, I remember prior to the 2000 Presidential Election, many Right-Wingers were saying that President Clinton was going to find some way to declare Martial Law, so that the 2000 Presidential Election wouldn't go ahead and he could remain in office....didn't happen in 2000, won't happen in 2008.
It's a popular myth that keeps popping up. It's also a particularly nasty way of implying that the political opposition lacks the same faith in democracy that the rest of us have. It's a non-issue because too much has to go right for any administration to successfully declare martial law and suspend elections. Posse comitatus would have to be overturned. The Congress and the Supreme Court would have to concur. The people who actually work for the government would have to agree, the police and the military would have to support it. It's like throwing a bunch of cats in a sack and asking them to play nicely. It could happen- but it's much more likely that they'll fight.
