And obviously no one else does either.
IMO we need to do give the forces there the tools they need to get the job done. The Iraqi government needs to be stabilized and independant. Forces need to be set at bases we have in the area (outside Iraq) readty to move on a moments notice to help if they so need....but Iraq needs to stand alone, with a government they chose. We need a definite exit strategy and timetable.
It’s easy.
Curfew. Shoot anybody on streets after 9 PM.
Iron curtain. Shoot anybody trying to cross border.
Extermination camps for orthodox Muslims.
Teachers certified by USA.
Five – ten songs about friendship of Iraq and America the beautiful in Arabic on radio and TV every other hour.
In 7 years Iraqi people will gladly vote to become 51-th state.
Actually, I kinda agree with the iron curtain and curfew. Minus the shooting part...
We need to continue to listen to the Iraqi government without letting them depend on us.
We will have to pull out (the climate in this country won't allow for anything else) so we might as well set a timetable and have an exit strategy. But it does need to have some flexibility.
When our actions in Iraq move from nationbuilding to helping the unfortunate people cope with the aftermath of war, the politics of who thinks we should stay and who thinks we need to leave will do a 180. Better to have a plan for that now.
We need to make sure that Iran and other neighbors do not get a grasp on this new country or the results could be worse than if Saddam had stayed.
We need a positive result to overcome some of the negativity that has become pervasive in the world. We also need to stand together as a country.
We need to continue the war on terror. The threat of Islamic extremist (and moderates) is real and growing.
We need a good relationship with the groups within Islam that are rational. Extreme Islamic leaders can influence and motivate the disenfranchised masses against us. Rational leaders need our encouragement and support. We also need to make sure we don't make the same mistakes we made when we supported Saddam and other past regimes around the world.
We need to spread democracy and our way of life through the example we set. Some already hate us (in part) for this but unless we become them they won't stop hating us. We need to have our way of life be so appealing that they will become like us.
I'm sure there is more. This is just off the top of my head.
