Teen Pregnancy and Disease Rates Rose Sharply During Bush Years.

    • AIDS cases in adolescent boys have nearly doubled

    • Fall in gonorrhea infection rate reversed

    by Chris McGreal in Washington

Teenage pregnancies and syphilis have risen sharply among a generation of American school girls who were urged to avoid sex before marriage under George Bush's evangelically-driven education policy, according to a new report by the US's major public health body.

(Blend Images/Getty Images)In a report that will surprise few of Bush's critics on the issue, the Centres for Disease Control says years of falling rates of teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted disease infections under previous administrations were reversed or stalled in the Bush years. According to the CDC, birth rates among teenagers aged 15 or older had been in decline since 1991 but are up sharply in more than half of American states since 2005. The study also revealed that the number of teenage females with syphilis has risen by nearly half after a significant decrease while a two-decade fall in the gonorrhea infection rate is being reversed. The number of Aids cases in adolescent boys has nearly doubled.

The CDC says that southern states, where there is often the greatest emphasis on abstinence and religion, tend to have the highest rates of teenage pregnancy and STDs.

There are a lot more sources but I'll quit because the numbers are not in dispute. I'm merely trying to shed a little more light on the self imposed fantasyland that evangelical righties don't know they're in.

    Hmm from the CDC report

*During 1991--2007, the percentage of high school students who ever had sexual intercourse (i.e., sexual experience) decreased from 54.1% in 1991 to 47.8% in 2007.

    That's good

*During 1991--2007, the percentage of high school students who had sexual intercourse for the first time before age13 years decreased from 10.2% in 1991 to 7.1% in 2007.

    That's good too

*The percentage of high school students who had sexual intercourse with four or more persons during their life decreased from 18.7% in 1991 to 14.9% in 2007.

    That's also pretty good.

*he percentage of high school students who were currently sexually active (i.e., had sexual intercourse with at least one person during the 3 months before the survey) decreased from 37.5% in 1991 to 35.0% in 2007.

That also pretty good and we know the BEST way to avoid an unwanted pregnancy or STD is to not have sexual intercourse.

    * The percentage of currently sexually active high school students who reported that either they or their partner had used a condom during last sexual intercourse increased from 46.2% in 1991 to 61.5% in 2007.

I bet you like that one too.

    *HIV/AIDS

Trends for annual rates of AIDS diagnoses during 1997--2006 have been analyzed (Table 32). Among several groups (i.e., all youths aged 10--14 years, female adolescents aged 15--19 years, and women aged 20--24 years), rates either are relatively stable or decreased during this period. However, rates increased during the preceding 10 years among males aged 15--24 years. For example, during 1997--2006, the rate of AIDS diagnoses reported among males aged 15--19 years nearly doubled, from 1.3 cases per 100,000 population in 1997 to 2.5 cases per 100,000 population in 2006 (Figure 6).

Hmm so it started back in Clinton's term

    *Sexually Transmitted Diseases

The number of cases of chlamydia that are reported have generally been increasing for all groups, with the exception of females aged 10--14 years since 2004 (Figure 7; Table 33). Greater implementation of chlamydia screening is believed to account for much of the increase, especially for cases among females. Furthermore, only since 2000 has chlamydia been reportable in all 50 states, contributing to earlier increases in national case rates (23).

Well geez they didn't reported it before then and screen has gotten better so we are just finding in where we didn't before.

    * Gonorrhea rates decreased for >20 years until 1997; since 1997, rates have been stable, with some modest fluctuation among adolescents and young adults (Figure 8; Table 34). Gonorrhea infection rates among males aged 15--19 years ranged from 285.7 cases per 100,000 population in 2002 to 250.2 cases per 100,000 population in 2004 and then increased to 275.4 cases per 100,000 population in 2006.

So still lower than before Bush

    * Rates of syphilis typically are lower among adolescents than among young adults aged 20--24 years. However, the rates for syphilis among adolescents and young adults have been increasing in recent years, (e.g., rates among females aged 15--19 years increased from 1.5 cases per 100,000 population in 2004 to 2.2 cases per 100,000 population in 2006), perhaps mirroring the national trend in syphilis rates that has been observed across the entire population

Well geez it's not just the kids.

So what exactly are you holding Bush responsible for?

And you are willing to state for the record that that is what caused it......................you wanna think about that.

You think the way to lower pregnancy rates and STD's is to encourage sex................do quite see the rational there nor how the President has so much influence over it.

[/quote]which is why there was also a rise in deaths from playing in the road, burns from touching a hot stove and stabbings from running with the scissors. This is a reflection of the choices of those involved not the message. It is the individuals fault and responsibility.

Well if you will, notice that what was asserted isn't exactly true.
