Thread: Empire

I just got finished reading Empire, by Orson Scott Card and it really got me thinking. Is the US at the end of its republic stage? Is our next step to become an empire? Or will we just wither into a state that believes they are important but nobody listens too? When countries like China, India, and the EU (yes i know thats not a country but still) will their be room for 4 or 5 world powers? And now espcially with our low opinion with the rest of the world whats our next step?

It is possible the be a republic and an empire at the same time.

I believe the US will decline in economic strength as Asia begins to take the role of economic centre of the world.

But empires if they start out as a republic eventually lead to a emperor/dicator. Both rome and france are examples.

Not if there is separation of powers.

We already have an incredibley small empire. Puerto Rico, some islands in the pacific. We used to own the Phillipines. But we do try to limit our selves.

are you telling me that these areas are where America's influence ends??

If a president should ever get most of his/her own party in congress (like Hugo did) & the president is a tyrant, yes, we could face a dictator as president. We are too complacent & believe it can't happen....I am cynical, i think it could.

What kind of influece? Cultural? Millitary? Having bases in countrys does not equal an empire. I fby cultural then almost all over the world ppl love our culture especially Asia.

Actually, what you are talking about is not a culture, but a mass consumption of entertainment.

What do you think, how many peoples in Asia have read, say, Doctorow?
