I'm also in favor of assisted suicide.
In my opinion the problem lies in how to be sure someone is giving a clear and well-thought asking to be killed, many people who are in terminal stage of painful diseases are incoherent when expressing themselves or always on drugs.
In France we also had a case of a kind of psychotic nurse who killed many people, she always said they asked her to do it.
Legal or not it doesn't really matter in practice, people will still do it and Courts will still find a way not to condemn them (or to a symbolic sentence).
Here a guy, Vincent Humbert, almost totally paralysed, mute and blind after a car crash and suffering a lot, sent a VERY emotionnal letter to our President, asking him for the right to die. His mother said she would be assisting him in committing suicide. Vincent died. His mother and the doctor were put on trial. Medias and public opinion were all over the place. A few months later, a legislative act for a "right to let people die" was voted and the mother and doctor were discharged of any indictement.

A lot of people who overdose on sleeping pills don't succeed in killing themselves.

It's much more sensible if an assisted suicide is carried out by a doctor, and it's probably a quicker and more painless death as well....eg. the doctor could administer an injection of some drug cocktail.

It gets so much more complicated when you introduce a second party.

If the person wants you to do it it should be ok with everyone. Its those dang Christians complaining which makes this thing a big issue.

Medical doctors are prohibited under the ethical standards of their profession to assist in suicides.

Why does it?

The assisted suicide policy works perfectly well in the Netherlands, there's also a clinic in Switzerland where terminally ill people are allowed to go to in order to be helped to die with dignity....several terminally ill people from Britain have gone there....and there's been no complications.

Yeah, and they're also supposed to share their income with the one who taught them medicine .
Besides its only symbolic nature, not in every country doctors have to take this oath.
