There's no literal translation, as most of the Constitution is intentionally vague. HOwever, in the case of the first amendment, we have direct evidence of their intentions; they fucking told us.
Now kindly stop your blatant dishonesty when it comes to propagating your fanatical religious agenda. You know damn well there's a separation of ecclesiastical and civil affairs, and that's the most reasonable interpretation interpretation. You merely want it to be something else that's more conducive to your religious agenda, even though all evidence shows the opposite.
Like it or not the Constitution isn't black and white, cut & dry. You do need to interpret it, and the Federalist writings, including the writings of Madison, are useful in doing so, as many of the Constitutions concepts are descirbed by the Founders. James Madison, in reference to the First Amendment, mentions a wall of chuch and state at least 5 times. I guess he just was talking out of his ass accoriding to you: the Almighty Crusader for Christ.
Again, refer to the concept of a De Facto Religion.
