I don't believe I've heard Santorum say this in any of his campaign speeches/talks of late, perhaps because he isn't that dumb to think that he doesn't have to rely on Protestant votes in order to win the nomination, much less the Presidency (which i don't think he ever would), but he offered up this little jewel, back in 2008.
It is no secret that the Catholic Church's believes they are the only true Christians and he probably didn't come up with this idea on his own as the pope said something extremely akin to this.
As far as Rick Santorum is concerned, mainstream Protestantism "is gone from the world of Christianity." That's what he told students at Florida's Ave Maria University, founded by Domino's Pizza mogul Tom Monaghan, during a 2008 lecture.
The clip was unearthed by People for the American Way and played on Saturday's "Up With Chris Hayes" on MSNBC.
"We all know that this country was founded on a Judeo-Christian ethic. But the Judeo-Christian ethic -- sure the Catholics had some influence -- but this was a Protestant country," said Santorum. "And the Protestant ethic, mainstream, mainline Protestantism, and of course we look at the shape of mainline Protestantism in this country and it is a shambles, it is gone from the world of Christianity as I see it."

Pope declares Catholics the only "true Christians"
Pope Benedict has approved a new text asserting that Christian denominations outside Roman Catholicism are not true Churches in the full sense of the word.
The document, issued by a Vatican watchdog, has been criticised as offensive by some Protestants.
The text was written by the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, headed by Pope Benedict before his election as Pope.
It states that Christ established only one Church here on earth.
Other Christian denominations, it argues, cannot be called Churches in the proper sense because they cannot trace their bishops back to Christ's original apostles.
True to tradition

I wonder what the religious right (evangelicals) would have said if Barack Obama had uttered this. I'm sure that Faux News would have had a heyday with it and Reps/cons would be saying "see, we knew that Obama was not a Christian"! - but since it was Santorum that said it, most right-wing evangelicals, who put party before faith, will claim it isn't a big deal.
