“The odd thing in this world is that an eager-beaver type, with no original ideas, who mimes those in authority above him right to the last twist of necktie and scrape of chin, always gets noticed. Gets selected. Rises.”
― Philip K. Dick
It is, in fact, the root of socialist ideas.
Kant's epistemology, the one that turns the mind into mush, lead Kant to regard "collective subjectivism" as the standard of objectivity.
Hegel, following suit, declared that the "nation" has a mind or spirit of it's own ("zeitgeist"). These ideas lead to the greatest evils ever perpetrated on man, from Marxism to Nazism (Marx, incidentally, was a member of the "Circle of Young Hegelians").
Trace the history of political philosophy in Europe and at the very beginning of the chain you'll see Kant, and the results are very clear.
The future I see as most likely for Europe is a failed European Union and growing nationalistic sentiment, with growing domestic isolationism alongside growing international antagonism. The one who started this thread is one of many.
Liberal influence, derived from a strong dependence on the United States, is waning.

Different kinds of nationalism.
Most Americans are proud of their country. However, our "national" identity is rooted in liberalism. We were founded on liberalism. Liberalism encourages strong foreign trade and liberty for everyone in the world, cultural traditions and the will of the majority be damned.

A quote from Mises' "Socialism" regarding the nation as an "organism":
"Comparison with the biological organism should have taught sociology one thing: that the organism can only be conceived as a system of organs. This, however, merely means that the essence of the organism is the division of labour. Only division of labour makes the parts become members; it is in the collaboration of the members that we recognize the unity of the system, the organism..."
"... In the natural plant each cell lives its own life for itself while functioning reciprocally with the others."
