    Gitmo

Officials: Obama restarting Gitmo tribunals - USATODAY.com

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Obama said Friday he is restarting Bush-era military tribunals for a small number of Guantanamo detainees, though with several new legal protections for terror suspects. "This is the best way to protect our country, while upholding our deeply held values," the president said in a statement.
What ever happened to the outrage, it's been a year since this announcement and I still haven't seen any of my friends here upset about this.

The president's decision to go forward with tribunals, though in a new way, puts him in the position of reviving a Bush-era trial system he once assailed as deeply flawed — and which he opposed as a senator.
And in honor of summer, I'll just call this what it is. A flip flop.

If the president flip-flops and retreats to the Bush military commissions, he will betray his campaign promise to restore the rule of law, demonstrate that his principles are up for grabs and lose all credibility with Americans who care about justice and the rule of law,” said Anthony Romero, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union, in a statement.
The President did flip flop Anthony, and you are correct...the President will "betray his campaign promise to restore the rule of law, demonstrate that his principles are up for grabs and lose all credibility with Americans who care about justice and the rule of law." You're just sadly mistaken to think the original opposition to Gitmo was "care about justice and the rule of law." It was about policital oppositon to George W. Bush and today's silence from these same frauds on the Left proves it.

Now....as we struggle with finding a new place for these Cats...as we concern ourselves over costs and logistics, security and transportation.....remember the Left's consistent and most informed nemisis...Oldschool. Who has been telling you for years that Gitmo is a sheer stroke of genuis.

Got to say here, I told you so.

It's going on July 2010...he promised this prison closed 6 months ago....and not a single word from those who told me years ago this prison was creating terrorists. And we have Major Hasan, we have underwear man, and Times Square Haji........all terroist attack right here on our soil...and not one Democrat looks up and says, hey, it's because of Gitmo, they hate us because of our own "symbol of human rights abuses" or some similar nonsense coning in on Gitmo.

But, there is no political angle this time, the President is now their Messiah, Emmett Kelly......and Gitmo causing terrorism doesn't even come up now does it? They don't say one f'n word....do they?

    So f'n telling.

So, let me get this straight, republicans are trying to force Obama to return to tribunals, after the fear mongering slowed down moving Gitmo prisoners here, and you want to place the full blame on Obama as if he did this without any pressure.

    Well, disingenuous much?

I call it a flip-flop too. At least it is in the right direction. Are you disagreeing with the President's decision? Every true and sensible American I know who sees a President do what is best for the nation would either applaud him or says "About friggin' time!" but they wouldn't bitch about him doing something that they want. That's just idiotic. Are you an idiot, Oldie, or are you using each and every pretense to bitch about this President regardless if it is good for the country or not? Do you put country ahead of party or party ahead of country?

My respect for you drops a little each time you do that song and dance, Shooter. I don't like a lot of things this President and the past ones do and have done either, but they are still the elected Presidents. We should respect the office even if we are pissed about what they are doing with it.

Note the first quote says..with new legal protections for terror suspects.....which is a right move. Also, few minded anyone going to trial...what I and many had a problem with was 5 years with no hearing or trials. This is much to do about nothing..nothing but OS stirring a pot....
