A: Most like and respect me eventually, but not at first. I think my 'laid back' sometimes comes across as 'disinterested and cold'. Asia has no such thing as sarcasm or irony. They don't do it - it's rude beyond imagining. I really have to try to be genuine and never, ever be dead-pan when I joke. Students are terrified when they meet me. I look like their worst nightmare, I guess. Takes about a week.
