Well honestly...you could call Martial Arts my religion.

The goal being to perfect my mind, body, and spirit.

Of course that will never be attained...but that is all part of the philosophy.

If you build your body, you will build your mind and spirit...because they are intertwined and vice versa and then some.

    Its just a personal goal.

And you can train with the physical portion anywhere...I want to go there to learn more of the spiritual and mental side. I need more strict guidance...and quite hoenstly and stricter training regime.

I started training in Wah Lam Tam Tui Northern Praying Mantis when I was 10 and quit when I was in my 20's. NoShit. My parents put me in it to keep out of trouble. It was a traditional style Chinese martial arts system and we even had a few of those monks come do seminars from time to time. I know alot about various Chinese styles ( North, South, 5 animal..etc ) and thoroughly enjoyed the time a spent in that school.

As far as self defense, Kung Fu is definatley the long road with more emphasis being placed initially on physical training without much attention on application. As a younger student we would get are asses handed to us in competition by ppl that trained in Tae Kwon Do and Karate on a regular basis. After about year 5, no one could touch us. I never felt that traveling to China would be worth the expense, a good school can provide you with that kind of training here if you look hard enough. I found an old Chinese guy in Downtown Houston that taught out an old warehouse. He was definately the real deal.

Oh and now I'm old, and couldn't much care about martial arts. Go figure, all that time..
