I have been here for awhile. Before The Bear, I was thenextbesthang.
During that time, I've seen my fair share of people who have roundly declared, in one forum or another, that they are going to 'Get Up and Leave' - mostly, without splitting any hairs, its those who advocate a strongly conservative viewpoint.
To name a few: ivayne, conservative, bourne, truth detector, justoneman (a while back), ilikegw, ssgiceman, to name a few. I'm sure that there have been others.
Let me ask you all this question. Let me ask everyone who is considering leaving this question.
What the fuck are you all thinking?
Seriously, what the fuck are you all thinking?
This is discourse. Political discourse. We don't come here to fight (at least I don't). I know that I come here so I can learn how other people view the world - so that I could know someone, seemingly firsthand, who is a crazy gun-totting conservative republican that I agree with on many issues (michaelr). I come here so that people can critique my writings (johnlocke...although you've gone away) so that I can grow. I come here so that one day, when my fight will come, I will know which side is the right side, I will know which side I will be on, I will know which side is the side that will benefit humanity. Until then, I come here so that I can learn a little bit more about how the world works.
I don't come here to fight.
I come here to advance my reasoning. I come here to advance my ideological understanding of what America is currently. I don't come here to call people names, or vent out my frustration after a long day of studying.
So, why do you all come here? I don't know for sure, seeing as how I am not you, but you don't come here to learn. You come here to fight, you come here to escape, you come here to sit on an altar (your chair) and proclaim to the world (political hotwire) that your theory on the world is the truth, and that if someone insults your truth, they are your enemy.
You sit there and want to debate about politics, you want to talk about Barack Obama's pastor, or Hillary Clinton, or John McCain, but in truth you do not. You don't give a shit about how Barack Obama is, you don't give a shit about Hillary Clinton - all you care about is how you understand what you understand, and how your political beliefs are final.
Don't you see? You are part of the problem. You get all wrapped up in trying to say how your political beliefs are final, that you become your political beliefs - instead of becoming conservative the man, you are conservative the christian republican; instead of becoming Bourne the doctor, you are Bourne the John McCain supporter. You have ceased to be you, you have ceased to be American; you are now a christian republican, or a John McCain supporter, or a soldier.
You carry on all day about how America is good, or John McCain is good, or Christianity is good (granted, any of them may be: nothing is intrinsically good or bad, it depends how it is used), or everything that you believe is good; yet, when confronted with evidence that all is not how it seems, you attack those who have presented you with that evidence.
You are destroying the idea of America, you are destroying the idea upon which the institutions of this society were founded, that all men have inalienable rights, and that the proper operation of a society is one of respect between all of its people.
