Before you read this....know the following.
1. I am a member of the Army.
2. I do not want women to be out of the Army.
I feel that the double standard that clearly exists in the US military between men and women is unfair on almost every level. It is unfair to men to be expected to OK with the fact that someone who has to meet a lower standard is supposed to be treated completely equally.
But more than that, it is unfair to the women of the Military to be told that they cannot meet the standards of a man. Sex should be completlely out of the question in the eyes of the DOD. Granted women cannot serve in direct combat branches, but they can be put into a combat situation just as easily.
So take this example...
Transportation is a non-combat branch open to both men and women. On a convoy mission for delivering supplies or whatever, the convoy comes under ambush.
Now who has the better chance of survival? Someone who had to meet higher standards of physical fitness and training, or someone who has been told that they do not need to meet standards that are designed to save their life?
Men have to meet those standards for several reasons. To show they have the discipline to maintain a certain level of personal fitness, to prepare them for battle, and even for non-combat servicemen they are a Rifleman first and whatever second. So what does that make women in the military? Not a rifleman first? Again that goes back to it being unfair to both of them.
It just makes no sense.
Again, I am not saying women shouldnt be in the military. I could not tell someone who wants to serve their country in that way that they are not allowed. But god damnt, not everyone is cut out for the military.
Life sucks sometimes and you dont get what you want, for both men and women.
