An open letter to my fellow hunters

After experiencing the wonders of conversing with you (on another forum for hunting from which I was banned/resigned) I have reached a conclusion.

You guys are generally fucking idiots.

Now that doesn't mean you all are, just most of you.

One of you clowns claimed to have shot your shotgun at someone else, in the pond I hunt in, because the other person was taking shots at birds that you disagreed with. The sad reality is I was the only one that jumped down your throat about it. The rest of the "hunters" must have thought it was okay to do. Let me sum that up for you. You claim to have committed attempted murder over a duck. A duck.

All of you predator hunters out there who post pictures of coyotes that you have shot, you are shooting a dog. Are you going to eat it? I didn't think so. What is possibly the point of killing a coyote unless he is attacking your livestock? You play a tape of a wounded rabbit and then shoot a dog. Is that a sport? Is that fun? I find it disgusting. Same goes for crow hunters, raccoon hunters, prairie dog hunters, and all of you folks that kill game that you never intend to eat.

The drinking before going out is flat out stupid. It's 3:30 in the morning, you are hanging around a check station, and you are getting drunk. It's 3:30 in the morning. You are going to be carrying a gun. Does this seem like the actions of a reasonable person? Can you make it through a day without combining your guns and your alcohol? Two things I have never done in my life. I have never ridden a motorcycle after even one drop of beer, and I the same goes for handling a gun.

Okay, I am not a stereotypical hunter. I am fairly liberal. However, calling me a tree hugger is not something that really bothers me much. You whine about the shrinking amount of land to hunt on, then you call someone a name you deem derogatory regarding conservation. Which one is it? Conserving land is good or it is bad? There are, in the state of California, 110 public places to hunt ducks and geese. They are state and federal lands that have been preserved. You want more, and I want more, but let me clue you in. It's the tree huggers that are the ones lobbying to preserve land and restore wetlands. What a concept!

So from me to all the brain dead redneck hunters out there, fuck you!!

Wow. Even leisure time activities are polemic these days.

I haven't hunted since I was about 16, but I can appreciate your point.

I consider my self more of a sportsman than a hunter/fisher. The implications of the name are more fitting. I am a champion for our game and environmment and I would prefer to try to conserve our resources for future generations. All of these things encompass our responsibilities as sportsman. Quarry is second to that.

    Howdy thar feller hunter!

I shoot those dogs pretty often. They are overpopulating in the area, and with no natural predators, they will continue to overpopulate. Its not the threat they pose to my dogs, and my horses could handle every dog on the continent. These 'dogs' will drive rabbit and quail populations down faster than any animal asides from feral cats. I don't go so far as to snare or poison them, but I have no feelings of guilt for not eating them.

If it makes you feel any better, I do skin and tan thier hides and use thier sinew for hafting and fletching material. I also hunt them wearing buck skin, use cattail reed decoys, a reed call and shoot them with a Eastern Red Cedar sinew backed bow.

Interesting side note, the buzzards won't eat the dead dogs around here....strange.
