    Elementary School student councils

My daughter's school had their student council campaigns this week, (for President, Vice President, Secretary and Historian). The cool thing is that one of the rules was that no negative campaigning was allowed, either on the posters or in the speeches. You could not talk bad about the other candidates or slander anyone. You had to be positive and just tell about what you would do to better the school.

I told some of the teachers and the principal that it would be funny if our country's politicians were given the same rule. Just be positive and don't talk smack about the other candidates. Yea right, when will that ever happen!!

*Oh, by the way, my daughter ran for Vice President, but didn't win. I told my wife my daughter should have said in her speech, "...and I promise to not be like Dick Cheney!"*

    LOL!
It sounds good to me. I always like that in the movies and so on. WE have student councils in Spain, but the election don't really include promises or speeches and normaly the most popular person that runs wins.
I would have grow up in America I would have also ran, like your daughter

I was on the student council in High School. It felt like we were really making a difference.

I agree. I was in the student council of my Elementary School. Like I said though, we kept it positive because the end result was to better our school and keep the school spirit alive and positive.

My point of this thread was that my daughter's school wanted campaigns positive and dirty-free. The political campaigns in the United States are all about saying how much your opponent sucks, which tells nothing about you.

My school also had that rule. I think it is a great rule - they can focus on the issues instead of the ooponent

I think it's already an unspoken rule, I mean really, smear campaigns in elementary school?

"Don't vote for Jeff, he has cooties!"

"Vote for Mary, at least her dad isn't a garbage man!"

"Brian for President because Mike likes girls, ewww!"

In my ellementary council, the pres for fifth grade was running for pres for sixth grade. One opponent was removed for pointing out the things the incombant had not done.

Yes, smear can happen at any age.

Thats great that they dont allow slander. Despite much slander and ridicule by mallory lawler my opponet who somehow rhymed Jacob and make-up I won my presidency, but it was rough to deal with the taunts "Don't vote for Jacob cause he wears make-up". I ended up liking making speeches infront of others, I ran for student body president in 6th grade at my middle school (6-8th grade) and won. I was on all three years and I'm class president second consecutive year at my high school. This is good for me cause I'm thinking of entering politics as a career. Any thoughts, criticisms or anything?

God I love the slander grade schoolers put out. It's much better than "Don't vote for Jake because his girlfriend is a whore" (Tracey ended up crying all day)
