    Why, because of public funding?

No....I was thinking more along the lines of that they have to follow the curriculum as do public schools in order to graduate with a diploma which is tied to state law.....like having to take biology and algebrae in order to graduate.

Hmm, I've always though charter schools were defined by a charter that is individual and not always associated with public schools. Perhaps the curriculum is similar or the same but the definition stood outside of that.

I'm sure I will learn something in this discussion.

My wife is a teacher and she says....some of them do not require that all instructors have a Masters or Bacheloer Degrees....yet even Cathoilic schools or Chrisitian which are considered private still have to follow state mandates in order to allow kids to graduate with a diploma....my wife says that the Charter are funded by the Fed but the parents must initiallypay a tuition ...which to me one does the same for public schools but then its called book fees.....in all of this the state still dictates what must take place in order for a kid to graduate. Despite private or fed or state donations. Or funding!

There should be set minimum standards for a child to graduate. What other entity has the authority to set these standards? Not saying the government should be involved in the day to day operations of schools.

Sorry to revive this old thread but, Charter schools are public schools of choice and they are run by locally elected school boards and financed by the state.. Unlike military schools, these are private institutions that provide academic and preparatory courses for students. They are valuable places where teens can get the discipline and personal attention they need to turn their lives around. Have a look at this website for more infos about military and boarding schools.
