A modest suggestion to you all

Some of you believe as I do that little good will emerge from the coming Administration and the next Congress.

Some of you seem to believe that we are on the cusp of a Golden Age.

My suggestion involves the possibility that my faction proves correct.

Please understand that for most of you, your food supply is extremely fragile. An interruption in production, processing transportation, retail marketing, or your own income can imperil it for a period. If you have or had relatives who lived through the 1930's you have probably had this explained to you.

So, my suggestion is that you should begin to ferret away some food and other vital supplies that have a long shelf life. It can always be consumed later if I prove to be wrong, and might play a vital role in your future prosperity if I'm right.

One other thing I'll add. If you take my advice, I urge you to do so in some degree of secrecy. If your less prudent neighbors should find themselves going hungry in the years ahead, it might be unfortunate should they learn of your preparations. This is espacially true of the millions who have embraced the concept of wealth-redistributuion.

Whether one wishes to arm or not is up to the individual. I am very big on gun rights, yet I don't own a gun.

Prudent secrecy though should obviate the need.

I am not predicting an apocalypse, merely forecasting a possible interruption, or interruptions in the food supply.

Whether people agree or disagree with me, I do not wish to see them go hungry.

Did you ever see the twilight zone episode where they had twenty minutes before a nuke was supposed hit a guy who had a bomb shelter? It was very hard for them to select who was going to live and who was going to die.

Anyone who goes survivalist would have to remain locked in thier house or thier neighbors would see them not dying and catch on. In the twilight zone the nuke attack turned out to be false, and then thier neighbors they shut out were there to greet them.

I have been storing lots of food, it's a good idea, but I'm going to share what I have with my neighbors, then put a bullit in my head when starvation becomes too painful...but I won't stand by and watch everybody die because what kind of world would one inherit, full of nothing but memories of death. I would rather die alongside my fellow man.

How's that for "sharing the wealth"? Now that I'm finished I find I'm curious if you have a literary motive here?

I could not agree more. I have more than once suggested this. It is not doom and gloom for those who are prepared but even the slightest disruption would be cataclysmic to many.

They used to grow vegetables and can them, then trade them in the 30's.

Hopefully people will realize that if neighbors help neighbors then we are all more apt to survive. I have a large family and very good neighbors who are themselves prepared but if someone needed food I would not deny them. Compassion and empathy are what separates us from our animal nature.

It's a fine idea, I'm not bashing it or anything. I'm comfortable with my forraging skills but wouldn't want to compete with everyone else, so rather than shove tomato soup in my pie hole for the forseeable future can someone please tell me the shelf life on some frieken beef jerkey?
