    Honestly, this is pointless.

Ya, I should have said we're capitalists.
    Why? You enjoy being wrong?

Not at all. You assume that because we are more advanced that suddenly we are automatically more complicated.
No, I don't assume that, I know that it's complicated and depends on a great number of things to function successfully.

We are not the USSR nor are we on the way to becoming like them.
We are very much on the way to becoming like them.

It would be antithetical to the desires of people that want profits. In doing so, we'd flush out nearly every company, which is a hell of a lot.
And it would be in line with the wishes of the masses who want a "free lunch", or those who think it's ok to force everyone else to give others a "free lunch".

    But I've never argued for government managing many things;
Maybe not, but nevertheless people like Obama and many of his supporters do. You haven't noticed more and more government interventionism in the economy? If not, you ain't paying attention.

If the answer were no, there would be no need for a futures market and everything would be spot market.
We can guess based on the current circumstances, but the future is far from "foreseeable", especially in this case.

Why would I trust you on this when I know that the majority of what I've learned I've learned on my own time?

He never actually has addressed the substance of Leo's or my own points of contention with his, choosing instead to adopt a supercilious attitude of profound wisdom dispensed in Yodaisms. I'm not sure where you fall in this discussion, since all you really seem to have said is substantially "Oh, Yeah, well you went to public schools."
Blatant lie on both counts. Either you're not paying attention or you're being deliberately dishonest.

and I'm not certain that has any bearing on Soviet poverty or American poverty, gov't regulation or the free enterprise system. Fixing a system is not abandoning it, even to someone presumably educated privately.
Capitalism as a concept isn't something you can "fix"... because it's a concept. If you want something different make a new word for it or, if you're honest, call your "fixed capitalism" the already existing word, "socialism".

There's nothing 'wrong' about knowing that we're a capitalistic society. The sooner you pull your head out of your ass, the easier it'll be for you to see. There's no reason to have fucking markets if we weren't.

Right, so then we can agree that industries have backup plans to circumvent a disruption in irrigation and that there are people ready in their appropriate sectors.

We are very much on the way to becoming like them.
    No, only idiotarians think that.

oh please, come off it. All it is is a tug of war. There will still be people becoming multi-millionaires based off of hard work, emerging markets, and optimism, not this pansy-ass pessimistic view that you and your fellow posters share. If we were intent on becoming like the USSR, we'd have done it long ago.

Government intervention will always be around, whether you like it or not. Some of it is good, like regulating the hell out of hedge funds so they don't short the markets and some are bad, like the retarded 'stimulus' packages.

We can guess based on the current circumstances, but the future is far from "foreseeable", especially in this case.
We guess, then we set in stone making january futures forseeable and locked in. It's called hedging kid. We already for see a commodity bubble in 2009-2010. We already see copper demand decreased for 2009 with China's economic slowdown.

We are not in deflation yet. It's likely we'll reach there shortly though. A lot of undervalued companies right now too considering the selloff. Kind of the same shit that happened from 82-87; everyone got scared and sold large volumes. Talks of half point rate cut too in December with a probable cut down to 0 in 2009.

Actually I was just demonstrating that having a will does not make a way.

There's something wrong with not knowing what a capitalist society is.

This isn't entirely about a disruption in irrigation, it's about a great number of things.

One thing falling out of place could cause the whole system to break down, and even a momentary break down would have disastrous effects.

The people and government aren't intent on becoming like the USSR because they don't understand how their intentions mean exactly that (well, some might).

Which doesn't mean you can say with any certainty that we're not going to have a food shortage.
