Saddam to get death sentence today

BAGHDAD: Iraq’s former military strongman Saddam Hussein faces a likely death sentence on Sunday amid fears that the verdict could provoke violent reprisals from his Sunni Arab supporters.

As a precaution, Iraq has cancelled all military leave and put the country’s embattled armed forces on alert to thwart any outbreak of violence before or after the ruling.

More than three-and-a-half years after Iraqis cheered the fall of Saddam’s massive statue in central Baghdad, the ousted dictator’s own end appears to have come near with the verdict expected to be a death sentence. None other than prime minister Nuri al-Maliki himself has hinted that the former military strongman will be executed.

"It won't be long," Maliki said last month, displaying a better grasp of the political significance of the drama than the niceties of due process. "An execution order on this criminal despot and his criminal aides will be passed soon," he said.

It is my understanding that he will go on trial for the gasing of the Kurds next. I think it will be years before he is hanged. I wish it were tomorrow! I think the Sunnis need to see this despot hanging in the street!!

He'll die in prison before he is executed. Not to mention, can you imagine the violence and carnage that will erupt once his death sentence is handed down? God forbid they execute him, the whole country of Iraq could be blown off the Earth in retaliation, then they'd come here. *shudder*

I disagree with you. I think this jolt of executive power from the Iraqi government is what is needed. I think the Sunnis on the fence need to have a little fear of civil disobedience thrown into them. I think it is time for some "firmness" from this new government. I have heard it that the people are laughing at this Sadam trial! They think it is a joke how he is jerking them around. A hanging would change their tune quickly.

I read that in an article today. They think that his death will slow the insurgents down and make them rethink their "cause." We can only hope that's what they do. Based on recent events, I doubt that will happen right away. I think there'll be some riots, some retaliation and slowly the violence will die down, but not right away.

initially some protest. Then it will be up to the new government to instill martial law...The whole time they could leave Sadam hanging in the streets. That would do it. Sadly this neccessary step cannot happen soon enough.
