GOP affiliated publication headlines full court press to force Gingrich out

Well we all know that Reagan's eleventh commandment has been tossed into the dustbin of history, but the Buckley rule lives, at least with his successors at his publication, at least in the following form: "We should support the most conservative candidate who is." Santorum is the only real conservative left in the GOP field to back and so they'll go with him, electable or no. He's not electable, a candidate that has regularly devoted his attention to the issue of contraception in a political season revolving around the economy simply isn't, but he's all they have left. And The Review has thrown down the gauntlet -- Gingrich, get out.

Say what you need to say, but if it is "everyone who disagrees with me is x," then do us all a favor and shut the fuck up.

I'm a liberal. Guess what, we all are. It's not about liberal vs. not, it's about progressive vs. conservative.

Either way (whether GOP is able to force Gingrich out or not), it's a win-win for Obama. If Newt stays, he takes votes away from Santorum and helps Romney, whom many conservatives have not warmed up to. If they force him out, Santorum may beat Romney. The Obama campaign should have a heyday publicizing all of the whacko statements and ideas (not to mention the inability to speak coherently) of Santorum.

I don't understand this reasoning. Why the most conservative and why not the most electable? Do they think the base won't vote for a Repub who isn't conservative enough thus giving the win to the Dem? I would think that having a candidate that appeals to moderates and independents would be a better choice because the candidate can't win if only conservatives vote for him.
“Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they’re sure trying to do so, it’s going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can’t and won’t compromise. I know, I’ve tried to deal with them.”

There is a definite established line of thought within Republican ranks right now that says "all our past 'moderate' candidates have been failures. If we don't peg to the right we will lose." It defies reason, ignores key facts about what the general electorate wants, but it justifies stuck-in-the-mud partisanship, which just infests them at this moment. I earnestly hope that they nominate an undoubted conservative like Santorum and then lose. If it's Romney and they lose it will get worse.
Say what you need to say, but if it is "everyone who disagrees with me is x," then do us all a favor and shut the fuck up.

The Republicans haven't been interested in the moderates for a while now. They are much more concerned with cultivating their brand of conservatism than attracting middle-of-road voters. And it's not just the party itself; the voting block is also moving that way. Why else would they be bouncing from candidate to candidate?

And, unfortunately, the Dems are only marginally better. But their base isn't as screwed up the GOP; a moderate can find a few solid candidates to root for, and they actually stand a chance to get elected.

As for the OP, I think that picking Santorum over Romney will hurt them, but the same would be true with Gingrich.
I think Mertex is right on this one.

Shhhhhhh! They may hear you and put the word out. Santorum is a great choice, we need to reiterate that to them, make them feel like they've hit on a winner.

National Review is not the GOP, why did you say it was the GOP?
